Prediabetes: Lowering Your Risk

According to the CDC, more than 1 out of3 adults in the US has prediabetes, that’s a whopping 86 million people.  Even more alarming, is that 90% of them do not even know that they have prediabetes.

Although there is a ‘pre’ in the name, prediabetes is a big deal. It puts people at an increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes, heart disease and stroke. Without the proper lifestyle changes, 15%-30% of people with prediabetes will go on to have type 2 diabetes.

Many people go years without even knowing that they have prediabetes, so it is important to know which factors put you at risk:

  • Being overweight
  • Being 45 years or older
  • Having a parent or sibling with type 2 diabetes
  • Being physically active less than 3 times a week
  • Ever having gestational diabetes (diabetes during pregnancy) or giving birth to a baby that weighed more than 9 pounds

Diabetes affects every organ in the body, and people often develop serious complications, such as kidney failure, blindness and nerve damage. So, don’t take your prediabetes lightly! By making better choices and living a healthier lifestyle, you can reduce your risk!
