Why We Started Executive Home Care of Chester County: A Personal Journey from Patient to Caregiver

From Surviving to Serving: Our Story Begins

I never set out to start an in-home care agency. In my early thirties, I was simply trying to survive.

After a sudden illness, my life revolved around hospital visits, heavy medications, and a PICC line—a catheter that delivers treatment directly to a major vein near the heart. It was a lifeline, but also a constant risk. One wrong move could mean serious complications.

Now imagine that with two toddlers bouncing around. I remember saying more than once, “Sweetie, Mommy is not a bounce house.”

Thankfully, my support system stepped in. My parents—already in their seventies—and my husband, working full-time to keep us insured, became my lifeline. My dad cared for the kids, my mom managed the home, and my husband did everything else. They held us together when I couldn’t.

But even surrounded by love, I learned how fragile care can feel.

  • A nurse doing wound care casually critiqued my parenting.
  • Another dismissed my concerns, warning my medications would “hurt me later.”
  • A third questioned why my husband was so involved—his devotion apparently “stressed them out.”

I thought: If I feel this unseen while surrounded by family, what about people going through this alone?

When the Roles Reversed: Becoming the Caregiver

Years later, the roles flipped. My mom began showing signs of memory loss. My dad was diagnosed with Parkinson’s and COPD. Suddenly, I was the caregiver—managing appointments, medications, and late-night worries.

Even as his health declined, Dad never lost his humor. If his shaky hands spilled coffee, he’d smile and say, “Well, at least I share with the table.”

That resilience taught me something profound: caregiving isn’t just about survival. It’s about dignity, connection, and finding ways to laugh—even in the hardest moments.

Why We Chose Home Care

When my husband and I began searching for purpose beyond the 9-to-5 grind, our caregiving experiences became our compass.

We saw the gaps firsthand—not just at home, but in senior living communities, rehab centers, and skilled nursing facilities. When someone needs true one-on-one care, it’s often missing. We knew we could do something about it.

That’s why we founded Executive Home Care of Chester County—to provide the kind of personalized, compassionate care we wished existed when we needed it most.
