Tips for Long Distance Moves

Helping older loved owns move long distances, whether it be closer to you or to a warmer climate, can be difficult. There is a lot to consider and plan for, especially if they are moving to a different state. Here are some tips to help:

Discuss

If your loved ones still aren’t set on moving, discuss it with them. Talk to them about the benefits of being closer to you, living in warmer weather, having a smaller house, etc…

Make sure not to talk at them, these are adults and ultimately, they need to have a say in the final decision. Don’t leave them out of the planning.

Pack early

Packing can be a frenzy, especially if left until the last minute. Staying organized and starting well before the move is key. A great thing about starting early is that you can also start to downsize belongings at the same time. Organize things in categories like ‘keep’, ‘toss’ and ‘donate’, this will help eliminate clutter from the move.

Make sure to pack your valuables by hand if you can. This will ensure that nothing is lost or damaged in the move.

Also, mark boxes clearly and take inventory before, during and after the move. Do a count of the boxes and other large items in the old home, in the truck and in the new home, just to make sure that everything is there.

Minimize stress

If your loved one is okay with giving someone else control over the move, plan an outing for him or her. Go to the movies, the park, to the salon, out to eat, etc… This is an especially good tactic on move in day, as you can set up the house, fill the fridge and have everything just as they like it for their return.

Health Arrangements

To make it easier on your loved ones, make sure to have all prescriptions transferred to a local pharmacy and get a list of doctors in the area. If you loved one requires home care, make sure to call agencies ahead of time to get estimates and learn about the services they provide. This can greatly vary by state, so make sure to do your homework.

Moving at any age can be difficult, but it can be even more stressful for older adults. Talk to them, plan ahead, stay organized, and the moving experience will be much easier for everyone.
