Tips for Long Distance Caregivers

If you live far away from your aging parents or relatives, we know how difficult it can be to be a caregiver. Since everything must be handled online or over the phone, it is key to have all the information you need handy and organized.

Here are some tips to make long distance caregiving easier:

  • Be sure to have the names and contact information of all your loved one’s doctors. Also have all health insurance information, medication lists, allergy information and pharmacy contact information.
  • If you’re planning to pay their bills online you will need all bank account information, including credit cards, expenses and income.
  • Make a contact list of anyone in their neighborhood who can check in on them. Be sure to give out your number as well, so they can contact you if there is ever an emergency. Also have your loved one choose a neighbor to give a spare key to, just in case of an emergency.
  • It is a good idea to have copies of wills, living wills, power of attorney and insurance policies.
