October is Eye Injury Prevention Month!

October is Eye Injury Prevention Month

According to the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the American Society of Ocular Trauma, almost half of eye injuries happen at home, usually during projects and activities like home repairs, yard work, cleaning and cooking.

So what can you do to protect your eyes? The most basic and efficient thing you can do is wear protective eye wear!

How do you recognize an eye injury?

  • Trouble seeing
  • Cuts or bruises
  • Swelling
  • Change in pupil size
  • Eye discoloration
  • Something in the eye that cannot be removed

If you or a loved one experience a serious eye injury, do not try to treat it yourself. Because eye injuries can cause vision loss, it is very important that you see a doctor immediately. If the injury is severe, visit a doctor or emergency room immediately.
