Healthy Swaps for Candy

Healthy Swaps for Candy

It’s October, and that means it is Halloween season! If you’ve been to the grocery store, you’ve probably already seen the huge candy displays.

With all that candy around, it’s hard not to succumb to those candy cravings, so here are some healthy swaps:

Caramel Apples

If you like caramel or candy apples, try apples with peanut butter instead. You’ll cut out the extra sugar and replace it with some healthy fats.

Chocolate candy

Trade in those milk chocolate Hershey bars for some good quality dark chocolate. Milk chocolate has milk added, by switching to a dark chocolate you’ll be cutting out that milk fat. Not a dark chocolate fan? Try some low-fat chocolate pudding.

Peanut butter candy

If you gravitate towards candy like Butterfinger or Payday, have some roasted nuts instead. You’ll replace the sugar and bad fats for some heart-healthy fats and protein.

Fruity candy

Jellybeans, Skittles, Starburst… while they taste fruity, they are all sugar. Swap out these candies with some actual fruit! You can also opt for fruit snacks, but be conscious of the sugar content.

Snickers, Twix, Milky Way, Reese’s

For candies with different layers and flavors, you can create trail mixes with similar flavor profiles. Mix nuts with chocolate and dried fruit, you can even add seeds and toasted coconut. While this is a healthier option, make sure you are mindful of the sugar and fat content and portion sizes.

There are many ways to satisfy the candy cravings with healthier options, but it’s also okay to have a mini-sized candy bar every once in a while. The key is moderation!
