Preparing Your Loved One for Healthy Aging

Healthy aging is a hot topic these days, but how do we prepare our loved ones for healthy aging? Here are some tips:

  • Encourage exercise

Exercising, especially lifting weights, can help maintain bone density. Most people do not think of weight lifting when they think of exercises for the elderly, but in a group class or with a proper trainer, it is a great way to keep them strong and maintain bone strength.

  • Keep them social

Socialization is very important for seniors. Keep then social by helping them find classes or groups to join. More than likely, they will find people who they have things in common with and will be able to develop new friendships.

  • Keep on moving

Moving may get difficult for seniors, especially with the aches and pains of aging. But it is important to keep moving, as movement and exercise actually lubricate the joints and strengthen muscles around the joints.

  • Have some interests

Interests give you something to look forward to. Whether it is gardening, reading, or crafting, hobbies are not only fun, they also stimulate your brain. Picking a hobby is also a great way to get involved with the community and socialize.

One of the best things you can do for your aging loved one is encourage them to be healthy. Living a long life is important, but living a life with quality means much more.
